Mortgage Loans-Senate - Politico.com

From the page: "Senators and members of Congress do not have to disclose anything about their home mortgages â€" not how much they borrowed, from whom they borrowed it or what interest rate they paid. But amid allegations that Countrywide Financial Corp. offered special mortgage deals to two senators, itâ€s suddenly useful to know who has been lending money to the members of the greatest deliberative body in the world. The Senate Ethics Committee has already launched an investigation into the preferential treatment afforded to the two senators in question, Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) and Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), and leading Republicans in the House have called for a wider investigation into whether other lawmakers received any discount rates on their mortgages."

There was something vaguely familiar about the sound of her voice, especially when she was raising it to be heard over the crowd. She sounded, well, a little annoying. She sounded like somebody else. It took me a minute to put my finger on it, but it finally came to me. Hillary Clinton sounded just like Richard Simmons.

From the page: "I'm talking about the moment when an ordinary American--an all too typical American-- --held up a Bible and said (I write from memory, but this was his meaning): "I'm going to ask you a question whose answer will tell us all we need to know about every one of you: do you believe that every single word of this book is true?" And Giuliani answered like a sensible Catholic. And Romney answered like a Mormon scared to admit to the Book of Mormon. And Huckabee answered like a good Baptist minister, a good pastoral answer balancing faith and reasoned understanding. . . . And I looked up and realized that the Constitution had vanished. Because no one--not one candidate, not Anderson Cooper the moderator, not a single person in that packed and often raucous audience--spoke the only possible Constitutionally permissible answer: Article.VI. . . . no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

From the page: "Newly unsealed court documents reveal that United States prosecutors have decided to withdraw a subpoena that sought the identities of thousands of Amazon.com Inc. customers. The abrupt withdrawal came soon after a judge ruled that customers indeed have a right to keep their reading habits from the government. U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen Crocker stated in a ruling unsealed last week: "The (subpoena's) chilling effect on expressive e-commerce would frost keyboards across America. Well-founded or not, rumors of an Orwellian federal criminal investigation into the reading habits of Amazon's customers could frighten countless potential customers into canceling planned online book purchases," the judge wrote in a ruling he unsealed last week."
